Ngamba Island sits 23km from Entebbe on Lake Victoria, a 100-acre forested island given over entirely to orphaned and confiscated chimpanzees who cannot be returned to the wild. Run by the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust since 1998, it now cares for more than 50 chimps in a setting close enough to natural forest that most visitors forget they are on an island reserve rather than in true wilderness.
This is a fixed, easy alternative to forest trekking — a speedboat or canoe transfer, a platform viewing session, and for those who want more, an overnight caregiver programme that puts you to work on the sanctuary’s daily routine.
Park entry fees and gorilla and chimp permits in Uganda are set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
