East Africa’s wildlife is more layered than the postcard version. This page works as a starting point into the parts worth knowing before you go: the animals everyone asks about, and the ones nobody warns you about until they are standing in front of a bird list wondering what a lilac-breasted roller is. Use it as a menu, then follow the links that match what you most want to see.
The Big Five
Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. The name is a hunting-era hangover, not a ranking of what is worth seeing, but it remains the shorthand most travellers arrive with, and a fair place to start.
The Great Migration
Wildebeest and zebra moving through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in a rough annual loop, with river crossings that no operator can schedule for you in advance. It is a phenomenon shaped by rain, not a calendar event.

Primates
Mountain gorillas and chimpanzees get the attention, but Kibale alone holds thirteen primate species, and golden monkeys in the bamboo of the Virunga foothills are a different experience again. Trekking any of them is closer to a hike than a game drive.
Birdlife of the Savannah
Uganda has more than a thousand recorded bird species on its own, and the open savannah adds its own cast: secretary birds stalking through the grass, kori bustards, the grey crowned crane on the national flag. Even travellers who do not think of themselves as birders tend to notice.

Flora & Landscapes
Whistling thorn acacia, baobabs older than most nations, papyrus swamps, and the Rift Valley itself splitting the region into two branches. The scenery is not just a backdrop; it explains why the animals are where they are.

Beyond the Obvious
The animals that do not make the postcards, and the Albertine Rift endemics that bring dedicated birders back for a second trip, each get their own detail elsewhere on the site.

A good guide reads the ground as much as the checklist. Tell us what you most want to see and we will build a route around it.
