The four main gateways
Entebbe International Airport serves Uganda, about 35 km from Kampala. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi is the region’s busiest hub and the main door into Kenya. Kilimanjaro International Airport, between Arusha and Moshi, is the standard entry for Tanzania’s northern circuit. Kigali International Airport serves Rwanda and sits roughly 2 hours from Volcanoes National Park — the shortest airport-to-gorilla-trek transfer anywhere in the region.
Why Kigali sometimes beats Entebbe for a Uganda trip
This sounds counterintuitive until you look at the road distances. Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is 9–10 hours by road. Kigali to Kisoro, near Bwindi’s Nkuringo sector and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, is closer to 4–5 hours including the border crossing at Cyanika or Katuna. For travellers whose Uganda itinerary is built around the southwest — Bwindi, Mgahinga, Lake Bunyonyi — flying into Kigali and crossing overland can save the better part of a travel day compared with flying into Entebbe and driving the length of the country.
It does mean an extra border crossing, and a Rwanda visa or East Africa Tourist Visa if you plan to re-enter, but for a southwest-only Uganda trip it is worth pricing out both routes before booking flights.
Domestic and regional connections
Once inside a country, small aircraft do a lot of the work. Entebbe connects to Uganda’s remote parks — Kidepo Valley, a 700 km drive by road, is roughly a 90-minute flight instead. Kilimanjaro International and Arusha’s smaller airport both connect to Serengeti airstrips, cutting a 5–6 hour drive to under an hour. These flights are not cheap, typically $150–350 per person per leg, but for anyone short on days they buy back time that would otherwise go to the road.
Zanzibar and the coast
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport on Zanzibar connects directly to several European and Gulf hubs as well as to Dar es Salaam and the northern Tanzania circuit, making a safari-then-beach itinerary straightforward to book as two separate short flights rather than one long day of transfers.
Practical routing advice
- For a Kenya-only trip: fly into Nairobi, drive or fly to the Mara (roughly 5–6 hours by road, 45 minutes by air).
- For Tanzania’s northern circuit: fly into Kilimanjaro International, base in Arusha, drive or fly onward to the parks.
- For Rwanda gorillas only: fly into Kigali, drive 2 hours to Volcanoes National Park.
- For Uganda’s southwest (Bwindi, Mgahinga): compare Entebbe-and-drive against Kigali-and-cross-border before booking.
- For Uganda’s north and west (Murchison Falls, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth): Entebbe is the only sensible gateway.
One thing to check before booking
Light-aircraft safari flights almost always cap checked luggage at around 15 kg per person, including hand luggage, and require soft-sided bags rather than hard suitcases. Confirm this before you pack, not at the airstrip.
Connecting from outside the region
Most long-haul flights into East Africa route through the Gulf (Dubai, Doha, Addis Ababa) or through European hubs, landing in the early hours of the morning. Nairobi and Addis Ababa both work as one-stop connections to the smaller airports — Kigali, Entebbe, Kilimanjaro — if a direct long-haul option isn’t available to your final destination. Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport, run by Ethiopian Airlines, is worth knowing about even for travellers with no Ethiopia plans, since it often prices a Uganda or Rwanda connection lower than routing through the Gulf.
Border towns matter more than they look on a map
Overland crossings between these countries are ordinary road borders, not airport-style terminals, so build in time: an hour or more for immigration formalities on each side, longer at Gatuna or Katuna on a Friday afternoon when cross-border trade traffic is heaviest. Cyanika, the crossing nearest Bwindi’s Nkuringo sector and Mgahinga, is smaller and generally quicker than the main Kigali-Kampala route through Katuna. A good driver-guide will know which crossing to use and roughly how long it takes on that particular day of the week.
Timing your arrival
Most intercontinental flights land in Nairobi, Entebbe, Kigali or Kilimanjaro between midnight and 6am, a quirk of how long-haul schedules from Europe and the Gulf are timed. Build a buffer night into the plan rather than heading straight out on a game drive transfer after an overnight flight; arriving exhausted to a 6-hour road transfer is a rough way to start a trip that costs this much. A single night near the airport, followed by an unhurried departure the next morning, costs little and changes the first two days of the whole trip.
