Gorilla trekking is the reason most people come to Bwindi, but it is a short, intense morning inside a longer trip, and there is a case for building something gentler around it rather than driving straight back out afterwards. This itinerary routes through the crater lakes near Fort Portal, dozens of small volcanic lakes scattered through green hills west of Kibale, for a night that trades game drives for quiet and a decent glass of wine at sunset.
It works well as a honeymoon structure precisely because it does not try to cram in a second national park. One serious wildlife encounter, one properly relaxed stop, and comfortable lodges throughout rather than the more basic camps a longer overland route sometimes needs.
The drive between Fort Portal and Bwindi is long, around six hours through the southwestern highlands, but it is one of the better stretches of road in the country and passes through tea estates and terraced farmland that reward the window seat.
Park entry fees and gorilla and chimp permits in Uganda are set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
