The Rwenzori Mountains run along Uganda’s border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Margherita Peak, at 5,109 metres, is the highest point on Mount Stanley and the third-highest summit in Africa after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. Unlike those two, this is a proper mountaineering route rather than a long walk: the final push crosses glacier ice on the Stanley and Margherita glaciers, roped and in crampons.
This itinerary uses the Central Circuit, the classic and most direct line, compressed into five days for climbers who are already fit and acclimatised and want an efficient ascent rather than a leisurely two-week trek. It moves through four distinct vegetation zones on the way up, tropical forest giving way to bamboo, then heather and giant lobelia in the Bigo Bog, then bare alpine rock and ice.
This is not a beginner’s mountain. Anyone signing up should already have some experience of multi-day trekking at altitude and be comfortable with the idea that summit day starts at 2am by headlamp.
Park entry fees and gorilla and chimp permits in Uganda are set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
