The Trip in Short

North of the equator and drier than the Mara, Samburu and Buffalo Springs run along the Ewaso Ng’iro River and hold species you won’t find further south: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk standing upright to browse, Somali ostrich, and the beisa oryx. The light here is harder and redder than in the highlands, which photographers tend to either love or need convincing about.

This trip is built around vehicles with photographer-friendly seating and a guide briefed to position for light rather than simply for a sighting, with flexible timing so you’re not locked to a fixed drive schedule when something is working.

Fees and rules in Kenya's national parks are set by the Kenya Wildlife Service.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu

A five-hour drive north, climbing over the Aberdare foothills before dropping into drier country, arriving at the lodge in time for lunch and an evening drive along the river as the light softens.

Day 2–3: Samburu National Reserve

Two full days working the reserve for the Samburu Special Five, timed around dawn and late afternoon light rather than a fixed schedule, with a midday break at the lodge when the light and the animals both go flat.

Day 4–5: Buffalo Springs National Reserve

You cross the river to Buffalo Springs, quieter and drier again, for two more days concentrating on oryx, ostrich and the reserve's clear natural springs, plus an optional visit to a Samburu village to photograph beadwork and daily life with permission.

Day 6: Return to Nairobi

A final dawn session before the five-hour drive south, arriving in Nairobi by mid-afternoon.

Before You Book

What makes this different from a standard game drive itinerary?

Drive timing is flexible around light rather than fixed departure times, group size is capped small, and the vehicle is configured with beanbag rests rather than a roof hatch alone.

Is a long lens necessary?

A 300mm or longer is recommended for the smaller, more skittish species like gerenuk; a shorter lens still works well for landscape and habitat shots.

How hot is it?

Daytime temperatures often reach the mid-thirties Celsius; mornings and evenings are pleasant.

Can this itinerary be extended with Meru National Park?

Yes, Meru sits within a few hours of Samburu and pairs well if you have extra days.
