Bush to beach is the simplest combination on this list and one of the most popular: parks first, ocean second, in that order. After several early mornings and long days in a vehicle, a stretch on Zanzibar gives a trip somewhere to land.
What It Is Like
The safari portion runs like any standard wildlife itinerary, drives, camps or lodges, a driver-guide moving you between parks. The switch to Zanzibar is a short flight, usually via Dar es Salaam or direct depending on your route, and the pace changes immediately: swimming, diving or snorkelling, a wander through Stone Town, and considerably less time spent in a vehicle. Our Stone Town in a day guide covers how to use a single day there well.
Where It Works Best
Almost any of Tanzania’s parks, the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater or Tarangire National Park, combine naturally with Zanzibar because the connecting flights are short and frequent. On the island itself, the north around Nungwi and Kendwa has the liveliest beach scene, while Mnemba Atoll off the north-east tip has some of the best snorkelling and diving in the region, and Jozani Forest adds red colobus monkeys for a change of pace on the island itself. A Uganda or Kenya safari can be paired with the coast in the same way, though our own beach content centres on Zanzibar, Mnemba and Pemba rather than the Kenyan coast.
Best Time
The dry safari months, June to September and December to February, also give calm, sunny beach weather on Zanzibar, which makes this the easiest combination to time well. Zanzibar has a long rainy season, roughly March to May, that is worth avoiding for the beach half of the trip even if the safari portion falls outside it.
Who It Suits
Anyone who wants a complete trip rather than a single-focus one, honeymooners, families rounding off a long haul with something more relaxed, and travellers who simply want a rest after several early starts in the bush.

How We Plan It
We schedule the flight between your last park and Zanzibar with a buffer, since safari-area airstrips and connecting flights can run late, and we build in enough beach nights that the second half of the trip does not feel like an afterthought. Splitting luggage sensibly matters too: heavier safari kit, boots and warmer layers, can usually stay packed away once you reach the coast, so we suggest what to leave at the bottom of the bag.
One practical note: Zanzibar has required inbound travel insurance since October 2024, currently US$44 per adult and US$22 per child aged 3 to 17, covering a 92-day stay, and we flag this when we confirm your itinerary so it is arranged before you land rather than at the airport.
