The Trip in Short

Winston Churchill called Uganda the Pearl of Africa, and while the phrase gets used loosely by every operator in the country, this itinerary is built to actually justify it for two people rather than a full safari group: private vehicle, private guide, and a route weighted toward scenery and quiet rather than covering the most ground possible.

One gorilla trek anchors the trip, since it remains the single most memorable thing most couples do in Uganda, but the days either side are given over to the Fort Portal crater lakes and then Lake Bunyonyi, at nearly 1,962 metres one of the highest lakes in Africa and, by local account, named for the many small birds along its 29 islands.

Lodges throughout are chosen for character and setting rather than proximity to a park gate, and the pace assumes neither person is trying to prove anything to anyone.

Park entry fees and gorilla and chimp permits in Uganda are set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Entebbe to Fort Portal crater lakes

A drive west of around five hours to a lodge set above one of the Fort Portal crater lakes, with the afternoon free for a short walk around the rim or simply settling in with the view.

Day 2: Transfer to Bwindi

A further four to five hours south through Rwenzori foothill scenery to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, arriving in the afternoon.

Day 3: Gorilla trekking

A briefing at park headquarters, then the trek itself through Bwindi's forest, typically two to six hours depending on the assigned family's movement, followed by a full hour of observation.

Day 4: Bwindi at leisure

A day with nothing scheduled: most couples spend it resting at the lodge, though a shorter guided nature walk or Batwa cultural visit can be added for those who want to stay active.

Day 5: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

A short drive of around two hours to Lake Bunyonyi, one of Africa's highest lakes at nearly 1,962 metres, with 29 islands scattered across its surface and, according to local tradition, its name meaning place of many little birds.

Day 6: Canoeing and island-hopping

A relaxed day on the water in a traditional dugout canoe, visiting a couple of the lake's smaller islands, with time to swim, since the lake is free of bilharzia and crocodiles unlike most East African lakes.

Day 7: Return to Entebbe

The drive back north, around eight to nine hours with a lunch stop and a photo pause at the equator crossing near Kayabwe, to Entebbe for departure.

Before You Book

Can we skip the crater lakes and add a second gorilla trek instead?

Yes, the itinerary is flexible; some couples prefer two separate gorilla families over the scenic stop, though most find the change of pace welcome after the trek.

Is Lake Bunyonyi actually safe for swimming?

Yes, unusually for a Ugandan lake it is considered free of bilharzia and has no resident crocodile or hippo population, which is why it is popular for swimming and canoeing.

Can lodges arrange something special for an anniversary or proposal?

Most can, with notice, a private dinner, a decorated room or a specific viewpoint booked out; mention it at the time of booking rather than on arrival.

Is this itinerary only for honeymooners?

No, though it is built with couples in mind; solo travellers or friends travelling together are equally welcome, with a single supplement applying where relevant.
