The Trip in Short

Standard trekking permits give you an hour with the gorillas regardless of what you’re carrying. This itinerary doesn’t change that rule – nobody can – but it does build the rest of the trip around getting you into position early, keeping group sizes small, and giving Akagera’s game drives the extra time a photographer actually needs rather than the tourist-standard two hours.

Guides are briefed on light and positioning, not just species identification, and the schedule leaves room to wait rather than move on the moment something’s been “seen.”

Park fees and gorilla permits in Rwanda are set by the Rwanda Development Board.

Highlights

  • Small-group gorilla trekking with a photography-briefed guide
  • Golden monkey tracking in bamboo forest
  • Extended early-morning and late-afternoon game drives in Akagera
  • Boat safari on Lake Ihema for birdlife and water reflections
  • Flexible stop-and-wait pacing rather than a fixed checklist
  • Vehicle configured for low-angle and window-rest shooting

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali to Musanze

Transfer to the foot of the Virunga volcanoes, with an afternoon scouting walk near the lodge to test light and get familiar with gear before the main event.

Day 2–3: Gorillas and golden monkeys

Two full days built around the treks: the gorilla trek on the first, with a small group and a guide who understands how photographers move and where they need to stand; the golden monkey trek on the second, in better light conditions given the bamboo canopy's gaps.

Day 4–5: Lake Kivu transfer

A scenic drive to Lake Kivu with a stop for landscape shots over the terraced hills, then a day at leisure on the lakeshore – useful for processing images, resting, or shooting the water at golden hour.

Day 6–7: Akagera, extended drives

Two full days in Akagera with extended morning and evening game drives – longer than the standard tourist slot – covering savanna, wetland and a boat safari on Lake Ihema for birdlife and reflections.

Day 8: Return to Kigali

Transfer back to Kigali for departure, with time built in for a final packing check of memory cards and gear.

Before You Book

Can I bring a tripod into the parks?

Handheld shooting is standard for gorilla and golden monkey trekking due to terrain and permit rules; monopods are generally fine. Tripods are usable during Akagera's game drives.

Is the gorilla permit rule the same for photographers?

Yes – the sixty-minute viewing limit applies regardless of camera equipment, and flash photography is not permitted near the gorillas.

How small are the groups?

We cap this itinerary at four travellers so vehicle positioning and trek pacing can flex around photography needs rather than a larger group's logistics.

What lenses should I bring?

A mid-range zoom (roughly 100–400mm equivalent) covers most Akagera game drive shots; for gorillas and golden monkeys, something in the 24–105mm range handles the close working distance better than a long lens.
