The Trip in Short

Rwanda is compact enough that most operators compress it into a week. This one doesn’t, because there’s more here than a week allows: the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, Gishwati-Mukura’s restored forest corridor, and proper time at Lake Kivu, alongside the standard gorilla, chimp and Big Five stops.

Twelve days means every stage gets at least two nights, transfers are broken up with stops rather than treated as dead time, and the itinerary can absorb a delayed trek or a rained-out afternoon without falling apart.

Park fees and gorilla permits in Rwanda are set by the Rwanda Development Board.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali to Musanze

The drive north into the volcanic highlands, arriving in time to settle in before the next day's trek.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking

The main event – briefing at Kinigi, the trek itself, and an hour with a habituated gorilla family.

Day 3: Golden monkeys and Twin Lakes

A shorter morning trek for golden monkeys, then an afternoon drive to a viewpoint over Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo, the Twin Lakes that sit below the volcanoes' northern slopes.

Day 4–5: Gishwati-Mukura

A three-hour drive to Rwanda's newest and smallest national park, a restored rainforest corridor rebuilt after decades of logging. Activities include chimp trekking among a smaller, more relaxed population than Nyungwe's, golden monkey tracking, and a hike to the Mukura or Gihanga waterfalls.

Day 6–7: Lake Kivu and on to Nyungwe

A short transfer to Lake Kivu's shore for a night of rest, boats and lake views, before continuing to Nyungwe Forest for two nights of chimp trekking and the 160m canopy walkway.

Day 8: Nyungwe forest trails

A further day at Nyungwe for colobus tracking or a specialist birding walk, depending on group interest.

Day 9–11: East to Akagera

A long transfer across the country to Akagera National Park for three days of full-day game drives, a boat safari on Lake Ihema, and an optional night drive.

Day 12: Return to Kigali

The final drive back to Kigali for departure.

Before You Book

Why include Gishwati-Mukura when Nyungwe already has chimps?

Gishwati-Mukura's chimp population is smaller and the forest quieter, with a strong community-tourism angle – up to half its tourism revenue funds local projects. It's a genuinely different experience from Nyungwe rather than a repeat.

Is twelve days too long for Rwanda?

Not if you want to see the country beyond its two most famous parks. This itinerary uses the extra time on places most visitors skip rather than padding out the well-known stops.

How much driving does this involve in total?

Several transfer days of three to six hours each, all on a mix of paved and gravel roads, broken up with stops.

Can Gishwati-Mukura be dropped to shorten the trip?

Yes – removing it brings the itinerary to roughly nine days while keeping the rest of the circuit intact.
