The Trip in Short

Three days is not long enough to see the Serengeti properly, but it is long enough to see a great deal of it. This trip skips the northern circuit’s other parks and puts almost every hour into Seronera Valley, where the permanent water and resident prey base mean lion prides, leopards in the sausage trees and healthy numbers of hyena are around in any month.

You fly or drive in from Arusha, get one full day of game driving with a picnic lunch in the bush, and a final sunrise drive before heading back. It works well as a stand-alone trip for travellers short on time, or bolted onto a Zanzibar beach stay.

Park fees and rules on the Tanzanian mainland are set by Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA).

Highlights

  • Full-day game drive across Seronera Valley
  • Resident lion prides and regular leopard sightings
  • Large standing herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle
  • Optional pre-dawn drive for predator activity
  • Bush picnic lunch inside the park
  • Easy add-on to a longer Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro trip

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to the Serengeti

Pickup from your hotel or the airport, then either the long drive west or, if you have booked the flight option, a 45-minute hop straight into Seronera airstrip. Either way you are on a game drive by early afternoon, with lion and elephant sightings likely before you have even reached the lodge.

Day 2: Full Day in Seronera Valley

This is the day the trip is built around. Seronera holds water year-round, so predators and prey concentrate here regardless of season. Expect a slow, thorough drive through riverine woodland and open plain, a picnic lunch under an acacia, and a good shot at all three big cats in a single day.

Day 3: Sunrise Drive and Departure

An early start while the light is good and the cats are still moving, back at the lodge for a late breakfast, then the transfer out. If you are driving rather than flying, budget most of the day for the return leg to Arusha.

Before You Book

Is three days enough to see the Serengeti?

Enough to get a real sense of it, not enough to see all of it. You will not reach the northern Mara River sector or the western corridor: this trip stays in central Seronera, which is the right trade-off for a short visit.

Should I fly or drive in?

Driving costs less and lets you stop at the Ngorongoro Crater viewpoint; flying saves most of a day each way. On a three-day trip, flying is usually worth the extra cost.

What is the vehicle like?

A closed 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof hatch for photography and standing views, shared with your group unless you have booked a private vehicle.

Do I need a visa?

Most nationalities need a Tanzania visa, available on arrival or online in advance. Check current requirements for your passport before you travel.
