The Trip in Short

This itinerary runs the standard southwestern circuit in the opposite direction to most, starting at Lake Mburo rather than ending there, which changes the rhythm of the trip: an easy, low-key opening two days before the gorilla trek, rather than building toward it as the final push.

Lake Mburo’s zebra and eland herds, unusual for Uganda where savanna parks are otherwise thin on the ground, open the trip; Bwindi’s gorillas form the centrepiece; Queen Elizabeth’s Kazinga Channel and Ishasha sector add density and variety; Kibale’s chimps close things out on a primate high note before the final transfer back north.

Nine days is enough to let each stop run two nights rather than the flying one-night visits a shorter circuit forces, which matters more than it sounds for actually settling into a lodge rather than just sleeping in it.

Park entry fees and gorilla and chimp permits in Uganda are set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Before You Book

Why start at Lake Mburo instead of ending there?

It gives the trip an easier, low-key opening rather than front-loading the long Entebbe-to-Bwindi drive on day one, and it lets you build gradually toward the gorilla trek rather than doing it while still adjusting to the time zone.

Is two nights in each main stop worth the extra time over a faster version?

Most travellers who have done both say yes; a single night rarely allows more than arrival, dinner and departure, whereas two nights leaves room for an extra activity or simply a slower morning.

What is Kibale's 'primate capital' reputation based on?

Thirteen primate species recorded in the park, including an estimated 1,500 chimpanzees, more habituated groups than anywhere else in the region.

Can the gorilla trek and chimp trek order be swapped?

Yes, the circuit can run in reverse on request, though this version is built to end on the lighter, shorter chimp trek rather than the more demanding gorilla day.
