The Trip in Short

Rwanda punches well above its size for birding, mostly thanks to the Albertine Rift endemics packed into Nyungwe’s ancient rainforest and the volcanic highlands. This circuit is built for people who care more about a Rwenzori Turaco than a lion sighting.

It moves from Nyungwe’s forest interior to the bamboo zone below the volcanoes, then finishes in Akagera and the wetlands around Kigali – Nyabarongo and Akanyaru – for the papyrus specialists that don’t turn up anywhere else on the itinerary.

Park fees and gorilla permits in Rwanda are set by the Rwanda Development Board.

Highlights

  • 275+ recorded bird species in Nyungwe alone, many Albertine Rift endemics
  • Rwenzori Turaco, Kivu Ground Thrush and Dusky Crimsonwing
  • Shoebill and 500+ species recorded in Akagera
  • Akanyaru and Nyabarongo papyrus wetlands near Kigali
  • Specialist birding guide throughout
  • Canopy walkway vantage point for forest-canopy species

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali to Nyungwe

A five-hour drive southwest, with a stop en route at a roadside overlook known for raptors and sunbirds. Arrival in the late afternoon.

Day 2–3: Nyungwe forest birding

Two full days on foot along Nyungwe's trail network, working through the park's Albertine Rift endemics with a specialist guide – species like the Red-collared Mountain Babbler and Albertine Owlet are realistic targets, alongside more common forest birds. The canopy walkway offers a rare above-canopy vantage point for species that rarely come to ground level.

Day 4–5: North to the volcanic highlands

The drive north to Musanze, with birding stops along the way. The afternoon covers the bamboo zone below the Virunga volcanoes, home to species associated with high-altitude bamboo forest rather than lowland rainforest.

Day 6–7: East to Akagera

A long transfer east into open savanna and wetland, arriving at Akagera for two days of birding by vehicle and boat, including a strong chance of the shoebill along the Lake Ihema reed lines.

Day 8: Akagera wetlands

A dedicated morning in Akagera's wetland zones for waterbirds and raptors – the park has recorded over forty raptor species alone.

Day 9: Kigali wetlands and departure

A stop at the Nyabarongo River wetlands just southeast of Kigali, a Ramsar-listed papyrus floodplain, before departure.

Before You Book

How many species is this itinerary likely to produce?

Experienced groups working this route with a dedicated guide commonly log several hundred species; exact totals depend on season and group pace.

Do we need our own optics?

Bring your own binoculars if possible; a spotting scope is provided for the group at Akagera's wetlands and Lake Ihema.

Is this itinerary physically demanding?

No – Nyungwe's trails are the most strenuous element, and even those are graded walks rather than technical hiking.

Can gorilla trekking be added?

Yes, as an extension at the Musanze stage, for the cost of the permit and an extra night.
