The Trip in Short

Ethiopia holds more endemic bird species than almost anywhere else in Africa, a result of its isolated highland plateaus and the string of Rift Valley lakes running south from Addis Ababa. This trail works through both: Ziway, Langano and Awasa for waterbirds, Awash National Park for dry-country species and the odd mammal, and up onto the Sanetti Plateau for high-altitude endemics found nowhere else.

It’s a serious birding itinerary rather than a general wildlife trip, run at the pace a proper species list demands – early starts, patient waiting, and a guide who knows every call.

Official visitor information for Ethiopia is published on Visit Ethiopia.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1–2: Rift Valley lakes

South from Addis Ababa to Lake Ziway, a reliable spot for pelicans, storks and a good range of waterfowl, continuing to Lake Langano for further lakeshore birding in a more wooded setting.

Day 3–4: Awasa and Awash

Lake Awasa adds fish eagles and kingfishers close to town, before the route turns north and east to Awash National Park, a dry Rift Valley reserve known for raptors and dry-country species alongside oryx and greater kudu.

Day 5–7: Bale Mountains and Sanetti Plateau

A long transfer to the Bale Mountains, followed by two days on the Sanetti Plateau – an Afro-alpine moorland above 4,000m that holds several endemics found in no other habitat, working the ground carefully with a specialist guide.

Day 8: Harenna Forest

A descent into Harenna Forest's cloud-forest habitat, home to a distinctly different bird community from the plateau above.

Day 9: Return to Addis Ababa

The drive north, arriving in the evening for departure.

Before You Book

How many endemics can we realistically expect?

Ethiopia holds around thirty endemic bird species; a focused nine-day trip covering this range of habitats typically produces a strong majority of them, season dependent.

Is this itinerary suitable for a non-specialist traveller?

It's built for birders first; a companion less interested in the species list will still enjoy the landscapes but should expect early starts and patient standing around.

What's the altitude range across the trip?

From roughly 1,600m at the Rift Valley lakes to over 4,000m on the Sanetti Plateau – a significant swing that some travellers feel more than others.

Do we need to bring our own field guide?

A copy of a current Ethiopian bird field guide is genuinely useful; our guide carries reference material but a personal copy speeds up identification.
