Mount Meru gets a fraction of the attention Kilimanjaro does, which is a mistake if you are climbing both. At 4,566 metres it is a real mountain, with a knife-edge summit ridge and a route that starts inside Arusha National Park, past buffalo and giraffe on the lower slopes before the forest gives way to heath and then bare volcanic rock.
Climbed alone, it is a satisfying four-day trek. Climbed a few days before Kilimanjaro, the altitude exposure measurably improves your chances on the higher mountain: a fact serious operators rarely advertise as loudly as they should.
Park fees and rules on the Tanzanian mainland are set by Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA).
