The Trip in Short

This trip covers the two names most people mean when they say they want to see Tanzania, without the long overland transfer between them. A scenic flight opens the Serengeti chapter; from there it is game drives, sundowners and bush dinners until a road transfer up onto the Ngorongoro rim for the final two nights and a full crater descent.

The pace suits couples particularly well: private vehicles, candlelit dinners and lodges chosen as much for the view as the game viewing.

Park fees and rules on the Tanzanian mainland are set by Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA).

Highlights

  • Scenic flight into central Serengeti
  • Optional hot-air balloon safari at sunrise
  • Sundowners and bush dining most evenings
  • 600-metre descent into Ngorongoro Crater for Big Five including rhino
  • Optional Olduvai Gorge or Maasai village stop
  • Crater-rim lodge with caldera views

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha

Airport meet-and-greet and a private transfer to a luxury lodge outside town, with a trip briefing and a gourmet welcome dinner.

Day 2: Fly to the Serengeti

A scenic flight to a central Serengeti airstrip, with a game drive built into the transfer to camp itself. The first proper afternoon game drive follows, then sundowners and a bush dinner under the stars.

Day 3: Full-Day Serengeti Safari

An optional pre-dawn balloon safari, or a straightforward sunrise game drive, then a full day exploring the plains for predators and migratory herds, a bush picnic lunch, and an evening campfire.

Day 4: Serengeti to Ngorongoro

A game drive out via the Ndutu area or the central corridor, with an optional stop at Olduvai Gorge or a Maasai village, arriving at a crater-rim lodge in time for fine dining and sunset views into the caldera.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater Floor

An early descent onto the crater floor for rhino, lion, hippo and flamingo sightings, a picnic lunch by the hippo pool, then an afternoon back at altitude for a spa treatment or a rim walk.

Day 6: Return to Arusha

Breakfast with crater views, then the drive or short flight back to Arusha, a farewell lunch, and transfer to the airport or onward to Zanzibar.

Before You Book

Is this trip aimed specifically at couples?

It is designed with honeymooners in mind (private vehicles and quieter, view-led lodges), but works equally well for any traveller wanting a compact, high-comfort safari.

What does the balloon safari cost if we add it?

Serengeti balloon flights currently run around $630–$785 per person for the roughly hour-long flight plus a champagne bush breakfast.

How much of the trip is spent driving?

Very little: the Arusha – Serengeti leg is flown, and the Serengeti – Ngorongoro transfer doubles as a game drive rather than a straight transit.

Can we extend to Zanzibar afterward?

Yes: this is one of our most common combinations, typically adding four to six nights at a beach lodge.
