The Trip in Short

Rongai is the one Kilimanjaro route that starts on the mountain’s northern, drier side, close to the Kenyan border, and it sees far fewer climbers than Machame or Lemosho as a result. The trade-off is a slightly less dramatic descent route (climbers go up Rongai and down via Marangu), for a genuinely quieter, drier ascent with good acclimatisation over six trekking days.

Rather than fly straight home from the mountain, this trip adds three unhurried days in Tarangire afterward: baobabs, elephant herds and considerably less altitude, which most climbers find is exactly the kind of trip their legs want next.

Park fees and rules on the Tanzanian mainland are set by Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA).

Highlights

  • Rongai's dry, quiet northern approach with fewer climbers than the southern routes
  • Mawenzi Tarn camp beneath Mawenzi's jagged spires
  • Summit at Uhuru Peak, 5,895 metres, via Gilman's Point
  • Descent through Marangu's rainforest, a different route down than up
  • Three days recovering among Tarangire's elephant herds and baobabs
  • A sensible, low-altitude way to close out a climb rather than flying straight home

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi

Airport transfer, gear check and a route briefing, with an early night before the drive to the northern trailhead.

Day 2: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

A drive around to the mountain's northern side, then a gentle first day through pine forest and moorland to Simba Camp at around 2,600 metres.

Day 3: Simba to Kikelewa Camp

Rolling moorland walking with wide views north toward Kenya, camping at Kikelewa in a sheltered valley below Mawenzi's jagged peak.

Day 4: Kikelewa to Mawenzi Tarn

A short, steep climb to a small tarn beneath Mawenzi's spires: one of the more dramatic camps on the mountain, and a good acclimatisation stop.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

Crossing the barren saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut at 4,700 metres, with an early dinner ahead of the midnight summit push.

Day 6: Summit and Descent to Horombo

A midnight start for Gilman's Point and on to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, followed by a long descent down the Marangu side to Horombo Hut.

Day 7: Descend to Marangu Gate and Transfer to Tarangire

A final walk out through the forest to Marangu Gate, then a drive to Tarangire, arriving in time to unwind before an afternoon game drive.

Day 8: Full Day in Tarangire

A full day among the baobabs and elephant herds: a striking change of pace and altitude from the days before.

Day 9: Tarangire and Return to Arusha

A final morning game drive before the drive back to Arusha for onward flights.

Before You Book

Why choose Rongai over Machame or Lemosho?

Fewer climbers, drier weather even in the shoulder rainy seasons, and a genuinely different landscape on the way up: the trade-off is a less scenic descent, shared with Marangu climbers on the way down.

Is six days enough to acclimatise on Rongai?

It is workable but tighter than Lemosho's eight days; climbers with any doubt about their altitude tolerance can add a rest day at Kikelewa or Mawenzi Tarn.

Why add Tarangire rather than flying home straight after the climb?

Most climbers are physically drained and mentally flat for a day or two after summiting: a low-altitude safari is a genuinely good way to recover rather than sitting in an airport.

Can this be combined with a longer Serengeti or Zanzibar extension instead?

Yes: Tarangire is simply the closest, lowest-effort option; ask about swapping in a longer safari or a beach finish if you have more time.
