The Trip in Short

Amboseli’s signature view – elephants against Kilimanjaro’s snow-capped bulk – sits on the Kenyan side of a border that Tanzania’s own share of the mountain looks back across. This itinerary uses that proximity: Amboseli first, then a straightforward overland crossing at Namanga into Tanzania for the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

It’s a shorter, more direct version of the classic Kenya-Tanzania combination, skipping the Masai Mara in favour of Amboseli’s specific elephant-and-mountain scenery before the northern circuit’s bigger parks.

Fees and rules in Kenya's national parks are set by the Kenya Wildlife Service.

Highlights

  • Amboseli National Park elephant herds with Kilimanjaro as backdrop
  • Overland border crossing at Namanga
  • Arusha as northern-circuit gateway
  • Ngorongoro Crater floor game drive
  • Serengeti game drives across the central plains
  • Maasai cultural visits on both sides of the border

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1–2: Amboseli National Park

A drive south from Nairobi to Amboseli, where clear-morning views put Kilimanjaro's snowcap directly behind the park's resident elephant herds – among the most photographed wildlife scenes in Africa. Two days of game drives cover the swamps and dried lakebed that define the park's habitat.

Day 3: Cross into Tanzania

An overland crossing at Namanga, one of the more efficient Kenya-Tanzania border posts, continuing on to Arusha.

Day 4–5: Ngorongoro Crater

A drive up to the crater rim and a full day's game drive on the crater floor, among the highest wildlife densities in Africa.

Day 6–8: Serengeti National Park

Three days of game drives across the Serengeti's plains, tracking resident predators and, season dependent, the migration herds.

Day 9: Return to Arusha or Kilimanjaro

A flight from a Serengeti airstrip to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Day 10: Departure

Onward or international connections.

Before You Book

Is the Namanga border crossing straightforward?

Yes, it's one of the more efficient posts on this route, typically an hour or two of formalities.

Why choose Amboseli over the Masai Mara for this itinerary?

Amboseli's specific draw is the elephant-and-Kilimanjaro backdrop, which the Mara doesn't offer; this itinerary is built for travellers who want that scene alongside the Tanzania circuit rather than a second grassland park.

Can the Masai Mara be added instead of or alongside Amboseli?

Yes, though it adds driving distance and at least two extra days; ask if you'd like the Mara included.

Do I need separate visas for Kenya and Tanzania?

Yes, each requires its own visa or e-visa; check current requirements for your nationality before booking.
