The Trip in Short

The Ethiopian wolf is the rarest canid on earth, with only a few hundred left, and most of them live on the Sanetti Plateau inside Bale Mountains National Park – a treeless Afro-alpine moorland over 4,000m up, reached by the highest all-weather road in Africa. This is not a Big Five safari; it’s a highland-endemic trip built around one exceptional animal and the strange landscape it calls home.

Harenna Forest, on the range’s southern slope, adds cloud forest, wild coffee and a real if outside chance of lion, along with a noticeably different set of birds from the plateau above.

Official visitor information for Ethiopia is published on Visit Ethiopia.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1: Addis Ababa to Bale

A full day's drive south through the Rift Valley towns to Dinsho, the park's headquarters, with mountain nyala often visible in the surrounding woodland on arrival.

Day 2–3: Sanetti Plateau

Two days spent largely on the Sanetti Plateau itself, a vast open moorland above 4,000m dotted with giant lobelia and crossed by Africa's highest all-weather road. This is prime Ethiopian wolf territory, and sightings – while never guaranteed – are realistic given the plateau's small but closely monitored population.

Day 4–5: Harenna Forest

A descent down the range's southern escarpment into Harenna Forest, a cloud forest that feels like a different country from the plateau above – lianas, wild coffee, and a noticeably different, more forest-adapted set of birds and primates.

Day 6: Birding and community visit

A morning of highland birding around the park's varied habitats, followed by a visit to a local community project connected to conservation work in the area.

Day 7: Return to Addis Ababa

The drive back north, arriving in the evening for departure.

Before You Book

Are Ethiopian wolf sightings likely?

No sighting is guaranteed, but the Sanetti Plateau holds the largest remaining population and multi-day visits with an experienced guide have good success rates, particularly early morning.

Is the altitude a serious concern?

The plateau sits above 4,000m and some visitors feel the effects – headache, breathlessness – more than at Bale's lower elevations. Acclimatising gradually and staying hydrated helps.

What's the temperature range like?

Extreme for one location: freezing overnight on the plateau, mild and humid down in Harenna Forest a few hours' drive away.

Are there really lions in Harenna Forest?

A small population is known to exist, but sightings are rare; treat any lion encounter here as a bonus rather than an expectation.
