The Experience

Ngorongoro Crater formed two to three million years ago when a volcano roughly the size of Kilimanjaro collapsed in on itself, leaving a self-contained caldera around 260 square kilometres wide with a permanent water supply and grass that never fully dries out. The result is one of the highest wildlife densities in Africa within a fixed, enclosed area — an estimated 25,000 large mammals live on the crater floor at any given time.

Vehicles descend a steep access road from the rim, at roughly 2,200m, down to the crater floor at around 1,800m, for a single game drive day — overnight stays inside the crater itself are not permitted.

Park fees and rules on the Tanzanian mainland are set by Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA).

How the Day Unfolds

Descending from the rim

The day starts early with a drive down the steep, switchbacked access road from the crater rim, dropping around 400 metres in elevation, the view opening out below as the caldera floor comes into sight in full for the first time.

A full day inside the caldera

Once on the floor, the closed nature of the ecosystem means wildlife is unusually concentrated and visible — lion prides, elephant bulls, buffalo herds and, with luck, one of the crater's small population of black rhino, all within a fixed area rather than spread across an open reserve.

Lake Magadi and the flamingos

A stop at the crater's soda lake, Lake Magadi, often turns up flocks of lesser flamingo feeding in the shallows, a reliable highlight distinct from the mammal-focused rest of the drive.

Ascending back to the rim

Vehicles must leave the crater floor by a set time each afternoon, since overnight stays inside are not permitted, climbing back up the access road as the light softens toward evening.
